"Antistorm" over Australia, 5 June 2012

A remarkable image was captured by the NASA Earth Observatory as a hole developed in afternoon stratocumulus clouds over the Great Australian Bight. The hole's diameter was up to 1000 kilometers. The sea-level barometric pressure was above average. It's an extremely counter-intuitive feeling for those who've lived on the Gulf coast for decades to see a picture of a giant circular opening in clouds caused by good weather!

The image, at the page below, was used as the February picture for the 2013 NASA Science calendar.

On Saturday the 12th HRPO will host a Science Academy session entitled "Storms!" for eight- to twelve-year-olds. The session runs from 10am to 12pm and costs five dollars per in-parish child and six dollars per out-of-parish child. The session is interactive and is limited to sixteen children.
