A hurricane is a tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of at least 119 kilometers per hour. Tropical cyclones forming between 5˚N and 30˚N on the Earth typically move to the west. During its life a hurricane can expend as much energy as 10,000 nuclear bombs. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November.

On Friday 20 September at 7:30pm, WAFB Chief Meteorologist Jay Grymes will give a lecture on hurricanes at HRPO.

Mr. Grymes' talk was well-received and informative. Considering the weather, a surprising number of people were in attendance.

As much of the Gulf Coast follows the track of Tropical Storm (previously Hurricane) Harvey, and NASA Headquarters and millions of Texas residents are bearing the wrath of this monster, the country as always relies on the technology on the ground and in orbit that helps us monitor and plan for serious weather events. HRPO's Science Academy session for Saturday 9 September will be "Weather Forecasting". The session is for eight- to twelve-year-olds and lasts from 10am to 12pm. Parents and guardians can stay if desired. The cost is $5 per in-parish child and $6 per out-of-parish child. There is room for sixteen Cadets, and HRPO must have four registered for the session to take place. [This is the first of three consecutive weather-related SA sessions. Any Cadet that attends all three sessions will receive a star on his or her next certificate.]
