NASA, wanting to rely a little less on Earth-based stations and create longer-duration communication technology, established the TDRS system in 1973. These satellites provide around-the-clock communications services to NASA's low earth-orbiting missions. The first TDRS launches took place from 1983 to 2002. Northrop Grumman built the first six satellites back when the company was known as TRW. New TDRSs are built by Boeing.
