Uranus Viewing, 2015

Post by Christopher K. »

The star brighter than mag 6.0 to which Uranus is nearest these days is F-class magnitude 5.2 Zeta Piscium. One can find the planet a little over a half-degree east-southeast of that star during the time spans below.

Below are the totally dark Baton Rouge times during which Uranus is at least thirty degrees up...
21 July = 2:29am to 4:42am
24 July = 2:17am to 4:45am
27 July = 2:05am to 4:48am
30 July = 1:53am to 4:50am
2 August = 1:41am to 4:54am
5 August = 1:30am to 4:55am
All times are Daylight. Uranus maintains a magnitude of 5.8 during these times.

The waning gibbous Moon will be fewer than two degrees from Uranus on 5 August.

After trying an outrageously circuitous route involving the Pleiades and Aries on Tuesday night, I followed a more straightforward path last night and got Uranus in sixty seconds--literally. At ~9:10pm I just focused on Algenib and dropped down two FOVs to Epsilon Piscium and Zeta Piscium. Uranus was to their lower right. To its lower right was a triangle formed by 73, 77 and 80 Piscium. For anyone who wants to look, Uranus will stay between the pair and the trio all this month.

Below are the totally dark Baton Rouge times during which Uranus is at least thirty degrees up...
26 December = 6:37pm to 10:39pm
29 December = 6:39pm to 10:27pm

Neptune is getting lost in the glare of the Sun, but we'll have Uranus for another month.
