ATREX

Post by Christopher K. » February 4th, 2013, 1:12 am

The Anomalous Transport Rocket Experiment consisted of five suborbital sounding rockets which scientists launched from Wallops Flight Facility, Virginia in March 2012. ATREX is a study of the upper level jet stream. Each rocket had a chemical tracer that glowed during reaction with oxygen, creating milky white clouds at about 100 kilometers altitude. The movement of the luminous clouds gave clues to the direction the winds up there. The launches generated reports from witnesses in North Carolina and West Virginia.

An image of the glowing clouds was used for the March picture in the 2013 NASA Science calendar.

Sounding rockets are improving these days. Over 100 university and community college students and instructors are building and flying experiments on a NASA Terrier-Improved Orion suborbital sounding rocket tomorrow morning. The rocket is almost eleven meters long and the payload weighs over 300 kilograms.

Live coverage from Wallops Flight Facility begins on both NASA-TVs at 4:30am CDT. The launch is scheduled for 5am CDT.
