On 31 January the Sun sets at 5:41pm. At that time the waning crescent Venus will be a whopping forty-three degrees up and the waxing crescent Moon will be five degrees to its upper left.

When looking at Venus on the 31st, try 15x to 20x magnification and it may be noticed that the disk is only about forty percent lit.

A continuation of the previous exercise is to note that Venus increases in diameter as its crescent shape shrinks. Take a look during twilight tonight, on the 15th and on the 28th. No description in a book or on a website can compare to the personal experience!

This is the week of Venus' greatest brilliancy. The Starry Night Pro Plus gives -4.6. Venus stays above fifteen degrees altitude until 7:49pm and tomorrow night until 7:47pm. Roz and I used a 9.7mm (!) eyepiece last night in an Astroscan to see a crescent Venus at 46x.

It's not really a conjunction, but tonight if one can work past the haze to see Mars a nice lineup can be seen of Venus (lowest) with Mars to its upper left and the Moon to its upper left. Go look in the next few minutes, though!
