Mercury has its greatest western elongation tomorrow morning. If your eastern horizon is unobstructed, see if you can pick out the tiny planet in the twilight. 5:59am to 7:01am is the best time span. If you can't see it without aid, try a binocular.

All this week Mercury heads toward Regulus, all the while climbing higher in the low eastern morning sky.

A special challenge the morning of Friday the 8th (probably requiring binoculars) is to find both of them plus Mars. Mercury is a good magnitude 0, while Regulus is 1.3 and Mars is 1.8 (a faint glow of the majestic warrior that will shine next summer). You might get them at 6:15am, half-an-hour before the Sun rises; the good news is all three of them will be at least six degrees up. An earlier time will give you a darker sky, but lower targets!

On Sunday morning (the 10th) Mercury will be only 0˚36' from Regulus!

Tonight at 5:30pm CST (at the start of nautical twlight), Mercury will be eight degrees up in the west-southwest. Can you find it? You may need a binocular; keep your hands steady and sweep that portion of the horizon from left to right. Happy Thanksgiving!
