It's not quite time for the ringed planet. It can be found next week at about fourteen degrees off the southeast horizon as morning twilight begins. It will be at thirty degrees and higher in the same relation to the Sun starting the first week in March.

Saturn is offering some nice views early in the morning this week. If binoculars are used one can possibly find M8, M20, M21 and M23; they are all near Saturn and in fact Saturn will just get closer to them as it crosses into Sagittarius in mid-May.

Saturn hits thirty degrees altitude in Baton Rouge at the following times...
25 April = 2:39am
28 April = 2:27am
1 May = 2:15am
4 May = 2:02am
7 May = 1:50am
10 May = 1:38am
All times are Daylight.

If you step out tonight (and it's clear) Saturn will be in the south-southeast at nightfall and part of a huge triangle, with the waxing gibbous Moon fifteen degrees to its upper right and Antares thirteen degrees to its lower right. This triangle should be easily visible through ~12:15am.

HRPO's Planet Time for Saturn takes place the evening of Saturday the 5th from 8:30pm to 10:30pm. It's "business as usual" except Saturn will take priority over any other object in the sky.

[The concept of Planet Time at HRPO will be retired after this calendar year. Instead, HRPO will simply be open for every superior planet opposition of the year, regardless of day of the week! The process to select dates for Mercury and Venus has not yet been decided.]
