Tiangong 1

Post by Christopher K. » February 19th, 2018, 3:49 am

The defunct orbiting Chinese outpost is fast losing altitude. There are only a few more times to see it, including...
this morning, ~6:07am to 6:12am
tomorrow, ~6:02am to 6:06am

Confirm with Heavens Above.

For Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening we have from Heavens Above three very nice visible passes--possibly the last to be seen from the Baton Rouge area...
*12 March = 8:10pm CDT to 8:12pm CDT / NW to NE / maximum altitude 33˚ NE / magnitude 1.1
*13 March = 7:58pm CDT to 8:01pm CDT / NW to SE / maximum altitude 58˚ NE / magnitude 0.2
*14 March = 7:45pm CDT to 7:50pm CDT / NW to SE / maximum altitude 75˚ SW / magnitude 0.2

Please confirm for your exact location by visiting Heavens Above. Your location's brightness prediction may differ by two-tenths of a magnitude, and the maximum altitude prediction may differ by as much as ten degrees.

I saw Tiangong 1 Monday night; boy, was it moving! I saw it also last night, and that time I remembered to have my Orion 10x50 Explorer in hand. Remember, it won't get above thirty degrees altitude again until 16 April--if it's still orbiting.

There are more possibilities, according to Heavens Above, for catching Tiangong 1 from Baton Rouge; at least, there will be other chances if the sky is clear.

These estimates will not be updated; they are accompanied by the forecast from NOAA for that hour...
*27 March = 6:32am CDT to 6:36am CDT / SW to NE / maximum altitude 60˚ SE / magnitude 0.2
NOAA forecast for 6am...
precipitation potential, 11%
sky cover, 97%
relative humidity, 90%
temperature, 20˚C
surface wind, SE 16 km/h

BAD

*28 March = 6:08am CDT to 6:11am CDT / SW to NE / maximum altitude 77˚ SE / magnitude -0.3
NOAA forecast for 6am...
precipitation potential, 11%
sky cover, 74%
relative humidity, 100%
temperature, 19˚C
surface wind, SE 11 km/h

POOR

*29 March = 5:44am CDT to 5:45am CDT / NE to NE / maximum altitude 35˚ NE / magnitude 1.4
NOAA forecast for 5am...
precipitation potential, 37%
sky cover, 81%
relative humidity, 93%
temperature, 21˚C
surface wind, S 13 km/h

BAD

Tom sent me the link below. Apparently someone obtained a radar image last week. Watch all major astronomy and space news sites and this site for continuing new information.
