Neptune Viewing, 2018

Post by Christopher K. » May 10th, 2018, 5:44 pm

This year's opposition for Neptune (while once again it's in the constellation Aquarius) will be on Friday 7 September. HRPO will be open on that night (with no lecture) from 8:45pm to 10:45pm CDT. All ages are invited.

Considering the new theory explaining Uranus’ severe tilt and the upcoming opposition of Neptune, the HRPO will present on Friday 31 August the lecture "Uranus and Neptune". The talk begins at 7:30pm and is aimed at a general adult audience.

The Science Academy session on 1 September will be "Uranus and Neptune". There are three Cadets signed up already; HRPO needs one more registered by 6pm on Friday for the session to take place...

Right now Neptune is between Phi Aquarii and Lambda Aquarii (moving toward Lambda). Sadly NOAA's forecast for tonight and after midnight has either cloud cover or humidity in the way.

The Neptunian Opposition (a week from tonight) may face inclement weather in Baton Rouge. The forecast will be posted as the date nears. (Plans are being drafted to introduce a full-go-to scope to the list of portable machines used during public viewing at HRPO.)

If any eight- to twelve-year-old who is signed up for tomorrow's Science Academy ("Computers through History") goes to the Neptunian Opposition event at HRPO tonight, he or she will earn an extra door prize ticket for the SA session. Similarly, and eight- to twelve-year-old who is signed up for the SA session tonight while at the event will receive an extra door prize ticket!

The forecast for the Neptunian Opposition is poor: over ten percent rain chance, over seventy percent cloud cover and ninety percent relative humidity. HRPO personnel will attempt sky viewing until 10:15pm tonight. Neptune will still be visible in the next few weeks.
