Jupiter Viewing, 2019

Post by Christopher K. » February 21st, 2019, 3:30 pm

Jupiter's opposition in 2019 occurs during the 9am hour on 10 June. Accordingly, the Jovian Opposition viewing at HRPO will be on Sunday 9 June from 9:45pm to 11:45pm. Jupiter will be in the constellation Ophiuchus and will be eighteen above the horizon. During this time all four Galilean moons (Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto) will be visible. Io and Europa will be initially quite close; the distance between them will grow during the viewing.

The event will have no admission fee and will be for all ages.

Due to HRPO hours being used for the Jovian Opposition on the 9th, there will be no regular evening viewing on Friday the 7th; HRPO will be closed on that date.

Many may have heard the exciting and distressing news that the Great Red Spot may be "unraveling". The GRS will not be visible during the Opposition session, but may be visible during other Jupiter viewing times at HRPO throughout the months of June and July.
