Neptune Viewing, 2020

Post by Christopher K. »

Neptune's opposition in 2020 occurs during the 3pm hour on 11 September. Accordingly, the Neptunian Opposition viewing at HRPO will be...
*Friday 9 September from 8:45pm to 10:45pm. Neptune will be in the constellation Aquarius and will begin the session nineteen degrees above the horizon. Mars, Ceres, Pallas, Jupiter and Saturn will also be in the night sky.

The event will have no admission fee and will be for all ages.

On Sunday the 8th at 7am CDT, Neptune will be in conjunction with the Sun. Due to Neptune's distance and the need for complete darkness while viewing, the times when Neptune will be available in the early morning for at least a half-hour will begin around the middle of June.

We are not long for this year's Neptunian Oppostion, during which time Neptune will be a magnitude 7.1.

Unlike last year's opposition, which saw Neptune in the same one-degree field-of-view with a relatively bright star (mag 4.2 Phi Aquarii), this year Neptune will only be near mag 9.1 F-class HIP115420.

Of course Neptune is still in Aquarius; it will remain in that constellation until about 3 May 2022 when it enters Pisces.

The following restrictions will apply for all patrons until further notice…
*All people who are not part of the same household must stay at least six feet apart from one another.
*Only thirty (30) patrons are allowed on site at any one time.
*Only twelve (12) patrons are allowed inside the main floor at any one time.
*No patron will be allowed inside the main floor unless he/she agrees to a temperature scan and wears a mask.
*Only one (1) patron will be allowed inside each bathroom at any one time.
*There is a strict time limit of thirty minutes for each patron’s visit.

Below is the NOAA forecast for HRPO's planned viewing time of 8:45pm to 10:45pm...
precipitation potential, 35%
sky cover, 55%
relative humidity, 86%
temperature, 27˚C
heat index, 28˚C
surface wind, NE 3 km/h

Danko's Clear Dark Sky states that during HRPO's viewing time the transparency rating will be "too cloudy to forecast" (0 out of 5) and the seeing rating will be "average" (3 out of 5). The 20OGS and 16OGS domes will be closed to the public until the six-foot rule is abolished. HRPO will close at 9:45pm; if it begins to rain anytime after 8:45pm, HRPO will close immediately.

The 11 September 2020 rating is...
EXCELLENT
VERY GOOD
GOOD
FAIR
POOR
BAD

Be of good disposition, though. A planet's opposition precedes several weeks of viewing opportunity.
