Mercury will become visible in the evening sky on Tuesday 5 January, when it will be over ten degrees away from the Sun. At that time, it will shine at magnitude -0.9 as it sets in the southwest while in Sagittarius.

Sunset is at 5:33pm CST. Below is the NOAA forecast for HRPO personnel's planned time of 5:15pm to 6:45pm for viewing Mercury...

Danko's Clear Dark Sky states that during HRPO's viewing time both the transparency rating and the seeing rating will be "too cloudy to forecast" (0 out of 5).

Due to these predictions as well as the possibility of any developing patchy fog beginning slightly early, the Mercurian Elongation will be canceled at the Burbank Soccer Complex; HRPO personnel will not be present.
