2011-2012 Great Red Spot Viewing Times

Post by Christopher K. » June 4th, 2011, 6:06 pm

Well, the opportunities to view the GRS start slowly but surely this month.

What I've tried to do here is to adapt the Sky & Telescope predictions for GRS transits to Baton Rouge viewing time. I limited it to times when Jupiter was at least 15 degrees above the horizon, and times on the dark side of civil twilight as provided by the U.S. Naval Observatory. Given those restrictions, I only included opportunities that were at least thirty minutes long.

June 2011
25 June = 4:19am to 5:35am
30 June = 3:24am to 3:58am

ALPO is stating the South Equatorial Belt is returning.

July 2011
5 July = 3:07am to 4:06am
7 July = 4:15am to 5:40am
12 July = 2:43am to 3:54am
14 July = 5:02am to 5:44am
17 July = 2:32am to 4:02am
19 July = 3:11am to 4:41am
22 July = 2:07am to 3:11am
24 July = 2:19am to 3:49am
26 July = 4:58am to 5:52am
29 July = 2:28am to 3:58am
31 July = 4:06am to 5:36am

A few minutes after two is the earliest available time for catching the GRS this month. As these are just adaptions of the universal Sky & Telescope transit predictions, these two assume the GRS at Jovian System II longitude 173°. The S&T staff made that longitude prediction based on data accumulated by JUPOS, a continuation of the 1979 International Jupiter Voyager Telescope Observations Programme (IJVTOP).

August 2011
August 3 = 1:36am to 3:06am
August 5 = 3:15am to 4:45am
August 7 = 4:53am to 6:00am
August 8 = 1:06am to 2:14am
August 10 = 2:23am to 3:53am
August 12 = 4:01am to 5:31am
August 13 = 12:47am to 1:22am
August 15 = 1:31am to 3:01am
August 17 = 3:09am to 4:39am
August 19 = 4:47am to 6:07am
August 20 = 12:38am to 2:08am
August 22 = 2:17am to 3:47am
August 24 = 3:55am to 5:25am
August 25 = 12:02am to 1:16am
August 26 = 5:33am to 6:12am
August 27 = 1:24am to 2:54am
August 28 = 3:03am to 4:33am
August 29 = 11:42pm to 11:59pm
August 30 = 12:00am to 12:24am
August 31 = 4:41am to 6:11am

The first time this season the Great Red Spot is visible before midnight is at the end of August. There are also half a dozen potential sessions to view at and after 5am.

The Juno spacecraft will launch in August. Although its primary purpose is to shed light on Jupiter's origins, we just might receive some nice color images of the GRS after Juno's arrival in July 2016.

November 2011
1 November = 1:31am to 3:01am / 9:22pm to 10:52pm
4 November = 3:09am to 4:39am / 11:00pm to 11:59pm
5 November = 12:00am to 12:30am / 6:56pm to 8:21pm
Standard time from this point.
6 November = 3:47am to 4:31am / 11:38pm to 11:59pm
7 November = 12:00am to 1:08am / 7:29pm to 8:59pm
9 November = 1:16am to 2:46am / 9:07pm to 10:37pm
10 November = 5:37pm to 6:21pm
11 November = 2:54am to 4:11am / 10:45pm to 11:59pm
12 November = 12:00am to 12:15am / 6:36pm to 8:06pm
14 November = 12:23am to 1:53am / 8:14pm to 9:44pm
16 November = 2:01am to 3:31am / 9:52pm to 11:22pm
17 November = 5:54pm to 7:14pm
18 November = 11:30pm to 11:59pm
19 November = 12:00am to 1:00am / 7:22pm to 8:52pm
21 November = 1:09am to 2:39am / 9:00pm to 10:30pm
22 November = 5:32pm to 6:21pm
23 November = 10:38pm to 11:59pm
24 November = 12:00am to 12:08am / 6:29pm to 7:59pm
26 November = 12:16am to 1:46am / 8:08pm to 9:38pm
28 November = 1:54am to 2:54am / 9:46pm to 11:16pm
29 November = 5:37pm to 7:07pm
30 November = 11:24pm to 11:59pm

Well, there's no excuse now to not see the GRS. There are at least fifteen lengthy chunks of time before midnight available in November. Considering the relatively steady skies (as the humidity hasn't been building up drastically until after midnight), these are prime "show times" for this feature.

December 2011
1 December = 12:09am to 12:54am / 7:15pm to 8:45pm
3 December = 1:02am to 2:32am / 8:54pm to 10:24pm
4 December = 5:31pm to 6:15pm
5 December = 10:32pm to 11:59pm
6 December = 12:00am to 12:02am / 6:23pm to 8:53pm
8 December = 12:10am to 1:40am / 8:02pm to 9:32pm
10 December = 9:40pm to 11:10pm
11 December = 5:32pm to 7:01pm
12 December = 11:19pm to 11:59pm
13 December = 12:00am to 12:49am / 7:10pm to 8:40pm
15 December = 12:57am to 1:42am / 8:48pm to 10:18pm
16 December = 5:33pm to 6:10pm
17 December = 10:27pm to 11:57pm
18 December = 6:18pm to 7:48pm
20 December = 12:05am to 1:22am / 7:57pm to 9:27pm
22 December = 9:35pm to 11:05pm
23 December = 5:37pm to 6:57pm
24 December = 11:14pm to 11:59pm
25 December = 12:00am to 12:44am / 7:06pm to 8:36pm
27 December = 8:44pm to 10:14pm
29 December = 10:23pm to 11:53pm
30 December = 6:14pm to 7:44pm

For those who won't or can't stay up late, this is the month with the most convenient times for GRS viewing. It's downhill from here, basically--although January should have as many choices of viewing times as November.
