Post subject:  2017 Solar Viewing

Once monthly at the Highland Road Park Observatory (13800 Highland Road) public solar viewing sessions will take place. There is no admission fee for these sessions and they are for all ages.

The first solar viewing session scheduled for the year at HRPO will be Saturday, 28 January from 12pm to 2pm.

Below is the NOAA forecast for HRPO's Saturday viewing time of 12pm to 2pm...
precipitation potential, 4%

Right now there are four active regions on the Sun, though no radio blackouts or solar storms or geomagnetic storms.

The next Sun viewing session for the public at the Highland Road Park Observatory will be Saturday 25 February from 12pm to 2pm.

Right now there are two Active Regions on the Earthward side of the Sun--2635 and 2636. Late last night, less than an hour before midnight, the Sun crossed from Capricornus into Aquarius.

In the past twenty-four hours there has been Level 2 geomagnetic storm activity, with Level 1 geomagnetic activity predicted for the rest of Thursday. At this time there are four Active Regions present on the Earth-facing side of the Sun. Between 2pm and 2:30pm CST personnel at the Highland Road Park Observatory achieved confirmed sightings of three of those active regions via a filtered 10" nighttime Orion telescope.

Because of these circumstances, HRPO will host a special solar viewing session on Saturday 4 March from 12pm to 2pm (immediately following Science Academy). The viewing session has no admission fee and is for all ages.

Below is the current NOAA forecast for that viewing time...

Danko's transparency and seeing predictions for that time frame have yet to be issued.

HRPO has monthly planned solar viewing sessions as well. This month's planned viewing session takes place on Saturday 25 March from 2pm to 4pm during this year's NanoDays event.

In the past twenty-four hours there has been a Level 2 radio blackout. Right now there are three ARs on the Earthside of the Sun, one of these (AR2645) having an incredible collection of at least four medium-sized and at least nine small spots! AR2648 consists of of at least six specks. AR2644 has plenty of white margins.

Solar viewing for the public will take place tomorrow afternoon from 3pm to 4:30pm at the Highland Road Park Observatory. Below is the current NOAA forecast for that viewing time...

At this time there are three Active Regions present on the Earth-facing side of the Sun. Between 10:15am and 10:45am CST personnel at the Highland Road Park Observatory achieved confirmed sightings all three of the regions via a filtered 10" nighttime Orion telescope; at least seven sunpots were seen.

Because of these circumstances, HRPO will host a special solar viewing session on Tuesday 25 April from 11:45am to 1:45pm. The viewing session has no admission fee and is for all ages.

There will also be solar viewing (weather permitting) at this year's International Astronomy Day, 29 April from 3pm to 5:15pm...

Danko's transparency and seeing ratings are both "average" (3 out of 5). All this translates to an Excellent rating on the HRPO scale, so take advantage of this wonderful opportunity!

At this time there are two Active Regions present on the Earth-facing side of the Sun. Between 4:30pm and 4:45pm CST personnel at the Highland Road Park Observatory achieved confirmed sightings of one of the regions (2654) via a Sunspotter. Personnel did not see 2655.

At this time there is one Active Region (2659). I looked at 2:30pm with a solar viewer and saw nothing at the non-magnified scale.

The next solar viewing session at HRPO will be this Saturday, 27 May from 12pm to 2pm. Here is the current NOAA forecast for that time...
