Perihelion, the closest point to the Sun that the Earth reaches during its orbit, occurs about midnight this Wednesday morning. It seems counterintuitive, as the temperature is forecast to be -3˚C then, but the cold weather is caused by our hemisphere being tilted away from the Sun's warming rays.
