Search for Meteors Possibly Connected to Hartley 2

Post by Christopher K. » October 29th, 2010, 1:02 pm

Early the evenings of 2 November and 3 November, when the Moon has become a thin crescent, scientists will be looking for any meteors that emanate from the constellation Cygnus. There is a slim chance that some of them are being caused by 103/P Hartley's debris trail.

On 16 October, a pair of cameras operated by NASA caught a fireball streaking across the night sky over Alabama and Georgia. It shared a number of similarities with a fireball that passed over Canada less than five hours earlier--a fireball recorded a set of cameras operated by the University of Western Ontario.

Scientists triangulated the fireballs' positions are determined that not only were their orbits similar to each other's, but that the orbits also closely matched that of Comet Hartley 2. Additionally, the speeds of the fireballs were slow, as a piece of debris from Hartley 2 would be.

It's not really likely, but this stuff could have been produced by Hartley 2. At any rate, those who are interested can view Cygnus (maybe while performing the Great World Wide Star Count!) on 2 November and 3 November from about 7:30pm to 10:30pm CDT.

You know, NASA has these All-Sky Cameras that constantly catch and count fireballs. The numbers are routinely announced at Tony Phillip's Spaceweather site.

Sometimes, creepies, crawlies and fliers will rest on one of the cameras, giving the personnel a surprise. Happy Halloween!
