I "toured" Cygnus Tuesday night and it was fun. A quick peek at Deneb at ~14x in an AstroScan brought to mind the phrase "blue blazes", though its light was steady. Gienah's golden color was a treat.

Last night I was at it again, after viewing an estimated mag 1.0 twilight pass of a rocket body. The Northern Cross was very high, its five or six major stars obvious. Between 8:45pm and 9:15pm I used 14x magnification to view, in fairly quick succession, Delta Cygni (a steady white-blue), Zeta Cygni (a nice beautiful star with a gold tinge) and Kappa Cygni (another dim golden glow).

Unless one has a very low western horizon (at least ten degrees clearance) Albireo is gone for now, with Deneb soon to follow. Most Baton Rougeans will not have a clear nighttime view of Cygnus again until about these upcoming times...

The Highland Road Park Observatory's Science Academy will have its "Constellation" session this coming Saturday at 10am. The session is for eight- to twelve-year-olds; parents and guardians can stay if desired. The cost is $5 per in-parish child and $6 per out-of-parish child.

At mid-northern latitudes Deneb will be replacing Vega this week as a good marker for zenith. However, at 11:15pm CDT Tuesday night the magnitude 3.2, G-class Zeta Cygni will be only 0˚11' from zenith.
