Herbig-Haro Objects

Post by Christopher K. » November 5th, 2014, 6:20 pm

A Herbig-Haro object is a small nebula giving off illumination due to jets of material from a young star colliding with material in interstellar space. HH objects were first described in the 1940s by George Herbig and Guillermo Haro.

Thursday's APOD shows a segment of Corona Borealis. In addition to a couple of larger nebulae, the picture has a couple of illuminated swirls of gas known to be Herbig-Haro Objects.
