Brad Schaefer of LSU's Department of Physics and Astronomy was one of a number of astrophysicists whose research helped a recipient of this year's Nobel Prize in Physics, Saul Permutter, ascertain that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating.
This research has led to Professor Schaefer's being invited to participate in the Nobel ceremonies this month in Stockholm.
In 2007, Schaefer shared the Gruber Prize with many others for his work which led to this astounding discovery.

Many believe that the beginning of the Big Bang event is an impassable barrier, and anything that came or happened or existed before is subject to only the most rudimentary speculation. On Friday 20 July at the Highland Road Park Observatory, Parampreet Singh will discuss the "time" before the Big Bang. Can our mathematical equations and laws of physics be of any use, or must the investigation be totally philosophical? The talk is aimed at a general adult audience and has no admission fee.
