In its three-and-a-half decades of existence, BRAS members have discovered over forty asteroids (alone or with assistance) and worked to protect the birthright of all American citizens to see a natural-darkness sky complete with Milky Way without having to travel an inordinate distance from their homes.

BRAS was founded in 1981 by Wally Pursell and Craig Brenden are original had their meeting at the East Baton Rouge Parish Library. In the mid-1990s BRAS members Walt Cooney, Merrill Hess and Melanie Hair approached LSU concerning bringing a professional-grade telescope to Baton Rouge. Physics professor Greg Guzik secured the funds for a 20"-reflecting telescope. Then the group asked BREC if it would be interested in having an astronomical observatory as part of the public offerings of the park system. Then-Superintendent Eugene Young directed a recently-donated building be erected on the south side of Highland Road Park. And we've been having fun ever since!

On Friday 22 April at 7:30pm there will be a brief retrospective of BRAS and an outline of what the club plans for the future. The lecture will be at HRPO and is aimed at a general adult audience. There is no admission fee.

BRAS' 35th Anniversary Party is Monday 14 November from 7pm to 9pm CST at HRPO. The event has no admission fee and is open to the public. Special guest Melanie Hair will be there. Melanie (back when she was still Templet) was instrumental in kick-starting the plans for HRPO. Although she moved before HRPO opened, it wouldn't have opened without her.

Coincidentally, the Party is the same night as the Supermoon (closest one in sixty-eight years).

The first annual "B.R.A.S. Showcase" will be Friday 15 June from 6pm to 9pm. This pre-summer (hopefully every year) offering will pre-empt the Lecture Series to offer a retrospect of BRAS' aesthetic and scientific accomplishments during its storied history, as well as arguments for the viewer to join.

At this time the BRAS membership fee is prorated to $15 through December for adults and $7.50 through December for those under eighteen...

Due to the weather, HRPO will have the BRAS Showcase only until 8:15pm. However, the prorating of the membership still applies. Personnel will have some memorabilia out for exhibit, also.
