Rocketry in South Louisiana

Post by Christopher K. » August 24th, 2016, 12:31 pm

At one time SOLAR--South Louisiana Rocketry (NAR Section #596)--was active in our area. I don't know if it still is; its last posted newsletters are from 2007 and 2008, and as of 2011 it was looking for a new launch site.

The Highland Road Park Observatory's Fall Rocket Camp takes places annually on the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving. This year the dates are 21 and 22 November. The Camp is for children ages nine to thirteen; the children are kept 8am to 5pm daily. HRPO Rocket Camp usually focus on two single-stage rockets, but for this year's Fall offering a sole two-stage rocket will be used...the Zenith II. The total cost of the Camp is $55 per in-parish child and $66 per out-of-parish child.

Tonight at the Highland Road Park Observatory, Ed Shihadeh will give a public lecture on high-powered model rocketry. The talk begins at 7pm; it has no admission fee and is suitable for those fourteen years of age and older.

Sadly, due to lack of registration (a possible effect of the Great Flood), the Fall Rocket Camp has been cancelled.

However, registration is now open for HRPO's Winter Rocket Camp. This year the dates are 28 and 29 December. The Camp is for children ages nine to thirteen; the children are kept 8am to 5pm daily. This year's Winter offering is a two-stage rocket called the Mongoose. The total cost of the Camp is $55 per in-parish child and $66 per out-of-parish child.
