2017 American Radio Relay League Field Day

Post by Christopher K. » November 29th, 2016, 3:25 pm

HRPO's twentieth anniversary is soon upon us, and the three partners in the venture (BREC, LSU, BRAS) are working to make this the best calendar year of public offerings in the facility's history!

As determined by the American Radio Relay League, 2017's ARRL Field Day emergency exercise will run from 1pm CDT on Saturday, 24 June to 1pm CDT on Sunday, 25 June. Last year's stated goal was "to work as many stations as possible on any and all amateur bands (excluding the 60, 30, 17, and 12-meter bands) and to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions". Field Day being the most popular Amateur Radio event, it is expected that 30,000 to 40,000 North American "hams" take part.

The Highland Road Park Observatory will be open to the general public from 2pm to 10pm on Saturday only. There will be no admission fee. The Baton Rouge Amateur Radio Club will host a GOTA station and other educational activities during that time span.

Starting this year HRPO will have a very American theme for ARRL Field Day--decorating the main floor and outside facade to celebrate this great country, and leaving the decorations up through Independence Day.

The 2017 edition of Field Day will see some wonderful premieres--the HypnoCube (purchased by the public during HRPO's last Donation Drive) at long last makes its debut. It has sixty-four RGB LEDs, and fifty-one distinct patterns. HRPO will also premiere an aerial map of a portion of south Louisiana acquired at an estate sale.

This Tuesday, 30 May at 6pm the Baton Rouge Amateur Radio Club will hold a meeting at HRPO to discuss preparations for Field Day; the public is invited to attend.

HRPO's 2017 shirt has been designed. It is purple and commemorates the amazing Cassini mission which ends this September. HRPO personnel will begin to take orders from the general public for this shirt beginning on ARRL Field Day.

It's confirmed--Mario Lozanov's famed City Gelato cart will return to ARRL Field Day! Mario is a chemist by trade, so he always experiments with different flavors. Bring some money to HRPO and be ready to taste test!

Also, solar viewers will be on sale for two dollars each. These viewers are perfect for the partial solar eclipse that will be seen from Baton Rouge on Monday 21 August. As of this moment, HRPO has eighteen viewers left before its large batch of 300 goes on sale on 21 July. HRPO will confirm any new remainder of viewers on Saturday; if there are still some available go as early as possible to Field Day to get yours.

Preparations continue to be on schedule. Jeremy (AD5XY) will be installing the temporary antenna this evening or tomorrow. BREC Maintenance has cleared a path to the north treeline so BRARC can install the second guy wire for the permanent antenna. This year's mini ARS Technician quiz will include prize for multiple correct answers.
