Bright shaft of light seen in night sky 11/20-21/17

Post by Tom » November 21st, 2017, 11:16 am

We have gotten a small number of phone calls here at the HRPO regarding a shaft of light that was reported to be in the sky last night. WAFB has an article this morning with a picture of the actual phenomenon. I believe this is called a light pillar and it is a more frequent occurrence in areas of extreme northern latitude. I have included a link describing how it occurs and a link showing photographs from other parts of the world showing this type of occurrence, albeit in much more dramatic form.

John Nagle and I saw this from the Burbank Soccer Complex from about 5:30pm to 6:15pm. It was about halfway up in the east. It was reddish and kind of blobby-shaped for a while. Then it took on a definite pillar shape. It was reddish-orange. I suspect it was light from a plant in St. Gabriel. The plant was giving off a glow the same color as the pillar. About forty to fifty college kids coming for extra credit for their astronomy classes also saw it with us, as did Galactic Cadet William D. and his mother.

A lady left a message at 10:26pm at HRPO. She and her husband live near the new Woman's Hospital and had been witnessing the phenomenon for about thirty to forty minutes; she said it was to the south-southeast. She said at one point the pillar split in two.

A man also left a message at HRPO, at 12:45am. He said he was in Gonzales and saw it in his western sky. These observations correlate with mine and John's.

This phenomenon may be classified as a light pillar.

This is my first time witnessing such an event caused by Earthbound light. Below is a video clip with another set of photos; it's from Channel 2...
