Triumph on 20 October, as the firing of a nitrogen gas canister during a six-second period when the cylindrical collection head had contact with the surface of Bennu, led to a more-than-full apparatus. Return is due in September 2023; needless to say, the Highland Road Park Observatory will host an arrival party.

NASA has planned a news conference regarding OSIRIS-REx for 4pm CDT today. The conference is in anticipation of a successful recovery of the capsule filled with sample rubble of asteroid Bennu. The recovery effort will take place on 24 September above the Utah desert.

Lonnie Shekhtman is saying there will be optimal conditions tomorrow in Utah for the sample recovery team. HRPO will host a Sample Return Party tomorrow morning from 9am to 10:30am CDT. James is making breakfast burritos; first come, first served!

The current NASA Image of the Day touts the success of the OSIRIS-REx capsule's return to Earth. Full of Bennu material, the capsule was flown to Houston on a USAF C-17. The Bennu sample was collected on 20 October of last year.

Today's APOD is a mediumr-range shot of the OSIRIS-REx capsule. One week ago today, the United States Postal Service released an OSIRIS-REx stamp; the stamp is always equal to whatever the value needed is for one ounce of First Class mail.

Note: Sometimes I also post about "today's NIOD" but no NASA Images of the Day are ever dated. Consecutive days may have the same image.
