Medical Imaging

Post by Christopher K. »

Dr. Joyoni Dey is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at LSU with expertise on medical imaging and image reconstruction.
On All Saints Day at HRPO she will briefly illustrate the physics behind X-ray, CT, MRI and ultrasound with example images. She will also show case examples of Phase Contrast X-ray imaging, where interference of X-rays are used to image the phase-shift of the X-rays while propagating through the human body. The lecture has no admission fee and begins at 7:30pm.

Professor Joyoni Dey and personnel at CAMD have invented "modular phase gratings to produce visible x-ray interference fringes in clinical detectors without requiring an expensive fluence-absorbing analyzer". Dey is listed as the primary inventor. The invention has a U.S Patent Office number as of 22 December 2020.

On Friday 5 March at 6:30pm, Professor Dey will give the presentation "A New Medical Physics Patent" to describe the invention and its potential applications, including in mammography.

Medical and health physics is one of three divisions of undergraduate study in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at LSU; the other two are physics and astronomy. There is also physics secondary education, physics as a second discipline, a minor in physics and a minor in nuclear science.

In six months, I'm going to go to school at https://www.trinityschoolofmedicine.org ... cal-school. I am attracted to the fields of medical imaging and image reconstruction. In this regard, I am thinking of enrolling in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, which will be related to medical physics. Having considered all prospects, and having got acquainted with statistics of this university, without doubt, I am ready and want to study here. To begin with, I will need to pass entrance exams in such disciplines as the primary language, mathematics, chemistry, and physics. So, right now, I'm taking an English course, as I'm going to college, with a foundation in English. Also, I want to learn physics. I believe that everything will work out and very soon I will learn in one of the best schools in the world.
