Post by Christopher K. »

Pre-planned evening viewing at the Highland Road Park Observatory begins for the new calendar year on Friday 7 January.

Notable binocular objects appearing in the Baton Rouge sky throughout the year include the Pleiades Star Cluster, the Perseus Double Star Cluster and "rays" (ejecta streaks) on our Moon. Notable telescopic objects appearing in the Baton Rouge sky throughout the year include the Orion Nebula (in which is embedded the young star group called the Trapezium), the Albireo double star, and the Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies.

Due to the transportation concerns accompanying the freezing temperatures, tonight's lecture "Atmospheric Phenomena" is postponed until February. Speaker Merrill Hess encourages everyone in HRPO's service area to take advantage of any clear skies and observe safely from front yards and backyards. It is possible to see some of the phenomena to be covered by the talk.

Below is the NOAA forecast for HRPO's planned viewing time of 8:30pm to 10pm...
precipitation potential, 2%
sky cover, 42%
relative humidity, 69%
temperature, 1˚C
wind chill, -3˚C
surface wind, N 13 km/h

Danko's Clear Dark Sky states that during HRPO's viewing time the transparency rating will be "transparent" (5 out of 5) and the seeing rating will be "poor" (2 out of 5).

Due to freezing conditions forecast to begin at 10:30pm, HRPO will be closing by 9:30pm. If the weather deteriorates any further, HRPO will close earlier.
