2023 American Radio Relay League Field Day

Post by Christopher K. »

Though the American Radio Relay League is still deciding, 2023's ARRL Field Day emergency exercise probably will run from 1pm CDT on Saturday 24 June to 1pm CDT on Sunday 25 June. This year's stated goal is "to contact as many stations as possible on the 160, 80, 40, 20,15 and 10 Meter HF bands, as well as all bands 50 MHz and above, and to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions". Field Day being the most popular Amateur Radio event, it is expected that 30,000 to 40,000 North American "hams" will take part.

The Highland Road Park Observatory will be open to the general public from 2pm to 10pm on Saturday only. There will be no admission fee. The Baton Rouge Amateur Radio Club will host a GOTA station and other educational activities during that time span.

Solar viewing will take place from 2:30pm to 4:30pm.

Just received word from Todd (AB5TH) and Dana (AD5VC) that the LaACES program will launch two balloons from Elton at 10am CDT tomorrow, weather permitting of course. The balloons have student payloads, one of which was put together by Jack (KE5GBG), Caroline (KJ5AWX) and Ange (KJ5AXK) of the LSU Amateur Radio Club. The flight is slated to last about three hours. Interested parties can track the launch by going to https://aprs.fi or https://amateur.sondehub.org and searching for the K5LSU-11 beacon or the W5YW-11 beacon.

Both Todd and Dana should be participating in ARRL Field Day at HRPO.

The BRARC Preparation Meeting for ARRL Field Day (which took place on Monday the 30th) was a success. Thornton (K5HLC) showed up early to map out logistics. Dana outlined exactly what was planned, what equipment the club possessed and what equipment was needed. Thea L. worked an Apprentice session and met some interesting hams.

It has been confirmed that an engine from the St. George Fire District will be on display in HRPO's bus loading area during the first half of ARRL Field Day. The engine will be "on call" so may have bid us farewell during the event.
