Observed Passes of Satellites, Rocket Bodies (etc.) in 2023

Post by Christopher K. »

This thread will be used to attempt to alert for the brighter visible passes of...
*The International Space Station
*Starlink strings
*the recently-launched BlueWalker 3
*Tiangong
...among others.

These alerts will not be comprehensive and their predictions should be confirmed with a second sources such as Heavens Above.

HRPO's first Edge of Night twilight viewing session of 2023 will take place on Friday 10 March from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. The viewing session has no admission fee.

Current predictions indicate four regular visible passes during this period, ranging in magnitude from 2.2 down to 0.2. Participants will also have a change to glimpse the elusive A-class magnitude -0.6 Canopus, which will culminate at a challenging seven degrees.

Monday 10 July, 9:29pm to 9:36pm CDT
International Space Station
magnitude -3.9

The ISS may reach a whopping -3.9 in brightness for some lucky spectators. It will move from southwest to northeast, reaching an angular altitude of seventy-five degrees as it passes through Serpens on its way to Hercules. Sadly the current NOAA forecast gives a rain chance in excess of thirty-five percent. [This is a generalized prediction for the HRPO area. Please confirm with an independent source.]

Tuesday 22 August, 8:23pm to 8:30pm CDT
Hubble Space Telescope
magnitude 1.8

Hubble may have a good pass. It will move from southwest to east, reaching an angular altitude of sixty-three degrees as it passes through Ophiuchus then under Altair. [This is a generalized prediction for the HRPO area. Please confirm with an independent source.]

Monday 10 July, 6:18pm to 6:24pm CDT
International Space Station
magnitude -3.9

The ISS may reach a whopping -3.9 in brightness for some lucky spectators. It will move from southwest to northeast. It will exit the Earth's shadow just east of Canis Minor at an angular altitude of eighty-three degrees. Be cautious; NOAA is currently stating "haze/smoke" for the HRPO area.
